As race day gets closer, many runners start worrying about one thing: “Am I training too hard… am I going to get sick?”, It’s a valid concern — but the answer isn’t as simple as cutting back.
Does training weaken your immune system?
After intense exercise, your immune system does dip slightly for a short period.
But here’s what most people don’t realise: overall, regular training actually makes your immune system stronger than someone who doesn’t exercise at all.
The real risk
The issue isn’t training itself, it is actually:
Overtraining without recovery
Poor sleep
High stress
Not fuelling your body properly
Should you reduce your training?
Not necessarily. Instead of cutting back completely, focus on:
Proper recovery
Listening to your body
Keeping your training structured
Warning signs to watch
You might need to adjust if you notice:
Constant fatigue
Getting sick often
Drop in performance
Poor sleep
Training doesn’t make you sick. Poor recovery does.
If you're preparing for Comrades, make sure your training is working for you — not against you.
